field home.

Clifford, who had no previous convictions, was charged with three counts of murder, one of rape, and another of false imprisonment.

He admitted the offences at St Albans Crown Court on Monday.

Det Ch Insp Gardner said: “Throughout the investigation and court proceedings, Clifford has shown little remorse for his actions and his silence means we might never know why he carried out these horrific killings.”

Clifford’s barrister said his client had not spun a “web of deception” but rather “a web of silence”, and was in a “state of shock”.

The judge, Michael Kay QC, ordered psychiatric reports ahead of sentencing on Tuesday.

Clifford could face a whole life order, which means spending the rest of his life in prison, or a life sentence with a minimum term set by the judge.
