Fire crews are currently battling a blaze in central London, with smoke billowing across the city’s skyline. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that around 40 firefighters responded to the incident at two buildings near Tottenham Street early Thursday morning. Six fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and as of now, the fire has been brought under control.
Alec McNally, station commander at the LFB, mentioned that the fire extended towards the roof of one of the buildings, which presented a challenge for the crews. Fortunately, the situation is now contained, and one individual was successfully rescued and transported to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation. The LFB advised the public to steer clear of the affected area and advised residents to keep windows and doors shut to avoid inhaling the smoke.
Eye-witnesses at the scene attested to the overwhelming and unpleasant smell of the smoke, describing it as “horrendous” and reminiscent of burning chemicals. The London Ambulance Service responded promptly to the emergency, with paramedics on the scene within minutes. An individual was treated onsite before being taken to a medical facility for further evaluation. Meanwhile, fire crews from various stations in the vicinity, including Soho, Euston, and Islington, are actively engaged in controlling the blaze from the ground and above using specialized equipment.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and the LFB continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the outbreak. Police and ambulance teams are also present at the site to provide support and ensure the safety of the surrounding area. The LFB confirmed that the ground floor of one of the affected buildings is significantly impacted, and efforts are ongoing to fully extinguish the fire and prevent further damage
