Create Music Group has acquired the music catalogues of deadmau5 and mau5trap Records for $55 million. This deal includes over 4,000 tracks and also signifies a partnership to release future recordings by deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman) and mau5trap, a label that has featured music from artists such as Skrillex, REZZ, and i_o.
Jonathan Strauss, the co-founder and CEO of Create Music Group, expressed his admiration for deadmau5’s impact on the music industry, stating, “When deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didn’t just create a brand—he sparked a movement. His vision redefined electronic music, pushing boundaries and reshaping the industry.” This acquisition is seen as inheriting a legacy that has transformed music and inspired a new generation to think creatively.
Deadmau5 himself reflected on the partnership with Create Music Group, stating, “We didn’t need to look far when we were considering a partner to help get it all to the next level. With Create, I feel the music is going to reach more.” This move is part of a trend in recent years where prominent musicians have sold the rights to their catalogues, similar to Stevie Nicks, Shakira, and Justin Bieber.
