The government has announced plans for a four-day celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the end of World War Two in Europe. The commemorations will take place from 5 May to 8 May, including a flypast, concert, and a service at Westminster Abbey. Veterans will participate in the events, with fewer of that generation able to attend, making this one of the last major wartime commemorations involving those who served.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that the celebrations will provide an opportunity for people to hear the veterans’ stories first-hand and to reflect and remember. Ruth Bourne, a 98-year-old who worked at Bletchley Park during the war, will be part of the commemorations. She vividly recalls the celebrations on 8 May 1945 when the Nazi regime in Germany was defeated and the electric atmosphere that engulfed everyone as people celebrated throughout the night.
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of safeguarding the British values that the Second World War generation fought to uphold. Tara Knights from the Royal British Legion mentioned that there will be educational and community engagement programs to encourage everyone to participate in this historic occasion. Arts Council England will also assist communities and local organizations in holding commemorative events. The article also raises speculation about potential international guests attending, including whether US President Donald Trump will be present, but nothing has been confirmed yet
