£5.95A tragic house fire that claimed the lives of a mother and her three children has led to a third man being charged with murder. The fire, which occurred on Westbury Road in Bradford on August 21 last year, resulted in the deaths of Bryonie Gawith, 29, Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle. The accused, Sharaz Ali, 39, sustained serious injuries in the same fire and was in a coma before being charged with four counts of murder.
Appearing via video link from a hospital bed before Bradford Magistrates’ Court, Mr. Ali faced charges not only related to the deaths of the victims but also for the attempted murder of Bryonie Gawith’s sister, Antonia, who was also his ex-partner. He was informed that he would appear before the city’s Crown court later the same day. The prosecution revealed that Antonia had recently ended her long-term relationship with the defendant and was staying with her sister at the time of the tragic incident.
It was noted in previous court hearings that Mr. Ali was not expected to survive the fire initially, but his condition has shown significant improvement since the turn of the year. Two other individuals, Mohammed Shabir, 44, and Calum Sunderland, 25, both of Keighley, were also charged with murder in relation to the fire and were set to go on trial at Bradford Crown Court. Discussions were being held regarding Mr. Ali’s medical fitness to stand trial alongside Mr. Shabir and Mr. Sunderland
