Starmer: Coalition of willing to guarantee Ukraine peace

During a recent summit, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed a comprehensive four-point plan aimed at working alongside Ukraine to bring an end to the ongoing conflict and offer protection against Russia. Starmer emphasized the significance of increasing collaborative efforts with countries like France and involving the US in providing support to Ukraine. This summit, which saw the participation of 18 leaders – primarily from Europe and notably including Volodymyr Zelensky, was deemed a critical juncture in history, as highlighted by Starmer, with Zelensky acknowledging the unwavering backing from the European nations and the demonstration of exceptional unity at a level unseen for quite some time.

Following the summit, discussions revolved around the importance of establishing a foundation for cooperation with America towards attaining true peace and ensuring guaranteed security for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron, in an interview with Le Figaro, disclosed plans, in partnership with Paris and London, to propose a one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine encompassing various spheres. Additionally, Starmer outlined four major points of agreement that emerged from the meeting, including keeping the flow of military aid to Ukraine intact, placing economic pressure on Russia, emphasizing Ukraine’s sovereignty and presence in peace negotiations, boosting Ukraine’s defensive capabilities post peace agreement, and establishing a coalition committed to upholding the deal and maintaining peace.

Moreover, Starmer announced a substantial £1.6bn export finance to procure over 5,000 air defense missiles for Ukraine, further reinforcing the UK’s prior £2.2bn loan intended for providing military assistance to Ukraine funded by seized Russian assets. Starmer made it clear that lessons must be learned from past mistakes to prevent Russia from breaching any potential agreement. While the specific countries joining the coalition of the willing were not named, Starmer assured that those in commitment would intensify planning urgently. Stressing on Europe’s pivotal role in the process, he highlighted the necessity of US support and inclusion of Russia, with the stipulation that Moscow should not dictate terms.

The summit also witnessed the participation of countries like France, Poland, Sweden, and others, reflecting a collaborative effort to fortify Ukraine’s position. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the pressing need to re-arm Europe, a sentiment reinforced by Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, who stated the significance of European countries stepping up to ensure Ukraine’s requisite support to persevere in the conflict. This summit marked the culmination of a week filled with diplomatic endeavors, including visits to Washington by Macron, Starmer, and Zelensky, although the latter’s confrontation with Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance sparked significant controversy and accusations
