Two new CalMac ferries under construction in Turkey are facing delays in delivery due to labor shortages. Originally scheduled for completion in October, the first of the fleet is now expected at the end of June at the earliest, causing further strain on CalMac, which is already dealing with a shortage of ships.
The delay was confirmed in a letter from CMAL, the government-owned ferries procurement company, citing global issues affecting the shipyard’s ability to meet deadlines. Specifically, labor shortages have impacted the availability of specialized commissioning sub-contractors, pushing back the project timeline.
The MV Isle of Islay, the first vessel in the fleet, was launched a year ago, with the MV Loch Indaal following three months later. CMAL anticipates a delivery schedule of six-month intervals from the completion of MV Isle of Islay, meaning the other vessels in the fleet will be delayed as well, with the Loch Indaal not expected until the end of the year at the earliest.
In response to the delays, CalMac has re-arranged its services to accommodate repair delays and new maintenance issues on its existing fleet. Chief Executive Duncan Mackison revealed that a third of the large vessels are currently out of action or operating with reduced capacity, necessitating adjustments to the service schedule
