In an interview with BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Sir Keir emphasized his role as a mediator between the two leaders, stating that his primary goal is to serve as a bridge between them. He expressed discomfort over the conflict in the White House and stressed the importance of finding a resolution to achieve lasting peace in Europe.
Sir Keir promptly reached out to President Trump and President Zelensky after the dispute to refocus their attention on the central issue. He highlighted the need for constructive action and called out those who were escalating tensions instead of working towards a peaceful solution. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of European nations collaborating to enhance defense and security capabilities, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Recently, the Prime Minister announced a reduction in foreign aid to boost defense funding to 2.5% of national income by 2027, following President Trump’s call for increased defense spending by NATO allies. Sir Keir urged all European countries to reassess their defense budgets and proposed a European “coalition of the willing” to provide a security guarantee in Ukraine.
