Rave, games and showers of Coco Pops: a night out at Liverpool’s Bongo’s Bingo

d was from the city. He’s a former scaffolder. One night he visited Mansion nightclub and was blown away by the atmosphere. Everyone was dancing on tables, there were sparklers, “ten-pin bowling with dwarfs”. He left, knowing what he wanted to do with his life: create a club night that was an experience. But also included – “I’ve never liked standing around and watching a show,” he says – elements that an audience could get involved in. Elements that gave them permission to behave in ways they might not otherwise. When, eventually, he started Bongo’s Bingo, at Camp and Furnace in Liverpool, he hand-picked the prizes – retro not new – and the music that would play during the games. The association of the call-out number and the songs that would play was there from the start.
