Teddy surprised with gift made from thousands of tubs he saved from landfill

In a heartwarming gesture, a young boy known as “Sweet Tub Teddy” has been presented with a bench made from over 2,500 recycled confectionery tubs that he saved from ending up in a landfill. Teddy, a six-year-old from Netley, Hampshire, collected the tubs through the Tub2Pub initiative, which aims to repurpose plastic waste into outdoor furniture. The bench, dubbed the “buddy bench,” was unveiled at Teddy’s school playground, much to his surprise.

Upon seeing the bench for the first time, Teddy expressed his belief that everyone has the power to make a positive impact, regardless of their age. The purple seat features a plaque honoring Teddy for his outstanding contributions to the Tub2Pub 2025 project, supported by Greene King, co-cre8, DCW Polymers, and Macmillan Cancer Support. Teddy, inspired by environmentalist David Attenborough, was determined to find a solution for the tubs that could not be recycled through regular means in Hampshire.

Teddy’s efforts extended beyond just collecting the plastic tubs; he also raised awareness by actively engaging with his community. Posting on Facebook as an “eco warrior on a mission,” Teddy highlighted the importance of diverting waste from landfills and oceans. Georgia Harlow, from Co-cre8, commended Teddy for his dedication to recycling and stated that the bench donated to his school serves as a testament to his achievements and the transformative power of repurposing waste material.

In a touching moment, Teddy visited a recycling facility to observe firsthand how the collected plastic tubs were transformed into functional furniture pieces. From loading the tubs onto a conveyor belt to witnessing the molding process, Teddy gained valuable insights into the recycling journey of plastic waste. The general manager of Shamblehurst Barn pub, where Teddy’s tubs were initially collected, praised the young eco-warrior for his remarkable contributions to Greene King’s Tub2Pub campaign, emphasizing the positive impact of his environmental advocacy efforts
