Great Western Railway: Train manager jailed for sex attack on passenger

A 38-year-old former train manager from Swansea has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman after asking to check her ticket. Nicholas McMurray, who was working for Great Western Railway (GWR) at the time, reportedly requested to see the woman’s ticket and then proceeded to adjust her dress during the incident in June 2024. The British Transport Police (BTP) stated that the assault took place while the woman was on the phone, just before the train arrived in Swansea from Cardiff.

Following the assault, the woman immediately reported the incident to officers at the station. McMurray was then arrested by the BTP while he was next to the stationary train. According to PA Media, McMurray claimed to officers that the victim had tried to kiss him and he had pushed her away. However, BTP refuted his claims, stating that McMurray was deceitful in his statements and was subsequently removed from his position as train manager for GWR.

McMurray was later found guilty of sexual assault and assault by penetration at Swansea Crown Court. In addition to his seven-year prison sentence, he will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life. The BTP emphasized that McMurray no longer works for GWR following the incident and subsequent legal proceedings
