In December 2023, a warrant was issued for a property in Oswaldtwistle, leading to the seizure of electronic devices that showed Bury had accessed police computer systems between October 31, 2019, and May 8, 2023, while on rest days or sick leave. Following her arrest and interview in March, she admitted to 32 counts under the Computer Misuse Act and received a suspended six-month sentence at Chester Magistrates’ Court. Bury resigned as a police officer during the investigation and was found guilty of gross misconduct in a hearing.
Det Ch Insp Pete Reil expressed disappointment in Bury’s actions, emphasizing the public’s trust in the police to handle their data responsibly, especially in cases involving crime victims.
