Bury farmer who reversed over and killed son jailed

Neil Speakman, a farmer, was handed a one-year prison sentence for the tragic incident that resulted in the death of his three-year-old son, Albie Speakman. The fatal accident occurred on their family farm in Bury, Greater Manchester, when Neil reversed a defective vehicle into Albie, causing catastrophic injuries. Albie had been playing unsupervised in a garden at the front of the farmhouse before entering the yard where the accident took place.

Although Neil Speakman was acquitted of gross negligence manslaughter, he pleaded guilty to a health and safety offense related to the incident. The court heard that Albie’s mother, Leah Bridge, had dropped off her son at the farm for a regular weekend visit with Speakman, from whom she had separated shortly after Albie’s birth. During the trial, Speakman admitted to failing to ensure Albie’s health and safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

In a tearful victim personal statement, Ms. Bridge expressed the profound impact of Albie’s death on her, stating that her world had been shattered into irreparable pieces. The court also heard that Speakman had a history of convictions for unrelated offenses involving violence and public order. Mr. Justice Bourne, while sentencing Speakman, emphasized the gravity of the tragedy and stressed the importance of taking responsibility for failing to ensure Albie’s safety.

Following the sentencing, Health and Safety Executive inspector Mike Lisle highlighted that Albie’s death could have been avoided and emphasized the importance of keeping children away from potentially hazardous farming activities. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the critical need to prioritize safety in all aspects of work and life to prevent such devastating accidents from occurring
