Born in Dublin on April 17, 1946, Kelly kickstarted his career in newspapers, notably working for The Irish Times during the civil unrest and Troubles in Northern Ireland throughout the 1970s. Eventually, he made the move to London in 1976 and joined the BBC, where he reported and presented for Radio 4’s The World Tonight. However, in 1980, at the age of 34, he decided to pursue a career as a light entertainment presenter, marking a significant shift in his professional trajectory.

Kelly’s on-screen success continued with his involvement in shows like ITV’s Game For A Laugh and the original Good Morning Britain on TV-am.
