A group of over 1,000 artists and music organizations have united to release a unique “silent album” in opposition to proposed alterations to a music copyright law in the UK. The album, entitled ‘Is This What We Want?’, protests against the UK government’s intentions to modify a copyright law that would permit AI developers to utilize artists’ work to enhance their own models. This would include music, artwork, text, and other creative works by artists, which could be used without obtaining a license, requiring rights holders to opt out if they disagree with the use of their work.
Several notable artists, including Damon Albarn, Mr. Scruff, Kate Bush, Jamiroquai, Emma-Jean Thackray, New Order, Imogen Heap, Cat Stevens, Nubiyan Twist, and Jordan Rakei have joined forces to oppose the proposed changes to the bill. The album features recordings of empty studio spaces, symbolizing the potential impact on musicians’ lives if the law were to be adjusted. All proceeds from the album will be contributed to the music charity Help Musicians.
“The musicians involved in this project have come together to speak out against the proposed changes,” states a description. “The British government should not legalize music theft for the benefit of AI companies.” Renowned British composer Max Richter is also featured on the album, released shortly after he presented a compelling plea to Members of Parliament, urging for better safeguards against AI for musicians. Max Richter criticized the UK government’s law proposals as “unfair and unworkable” during a speech given to various committees.
