Famous Ibiza viewpoint Es Vedrà blocked by locals in bid to curb tourism

Residents of Ibiza have taken action to limit tourism at the iconic Es Vedrà viewpoints. Concerns over excessive tourism, partying, littering, vandalism, and unauthorized sales of mojitos have prompted locals to block access to these popular spots, as reported by Noudiari. The residents near Cala d’Hort de Sant Josep have obstructed entry to car parks and lookout points, including a well-known area by the Savinar watchtower.

To prevent unauthorized parking and foot traffic, locals have placed large rocks in front of unofficial car parks. This move aims to reclaim private land that was previously being used for unregulated activities. The lack of surveillance and control over these environmentally protected sites has allowed tourism to spiral out of control, prompting residents to take matters into their own hands.

Last year, Diplo faced investigation for hosting an illegal rave at the Cala d’Hort viewpoint, garnering attention from local police and city council officials in Sant Josep. The aftermath of the incident threatened Diplo with a hefty fine of €300,000. In response to these issues, the Sant Josep Town Council expressed its commitment to resolving previous problems with goodwill and proactive measures.

As the debate over tourism management on the island continues, residents in Ibiza are grappling with finding a balance between preserving the natural beauty of Es Vedrà and catering to the demands of the tourism industry. With no official protocols in place to regulate access to these sites, locals are taking a stand to protect their environment and way of life from the negative impacts of excessive tourism
