Katy Docherty-Warren reported for the BBC News in the South East region that the Godstone sinkhole is set to undergo investigation using advanced 3D mapping technology, according to a council leader. The appearance of two sinkholes on Godstone High Street last week led to the evacuation of 30 households in the vicinity, although six families have since been able to return. Due to safety concerns, an operation by Surrey Highways to investigate the sinkholes had to be postponed until the following week.
Tandridge District Council’s leader Catherine Sayer mentioned that instead of borehole testing, the investigation will utilize remote sensing known as LiDAR to generate 3D maps. Sayer explained that less intrusive testing methods and survey methods will be employed initially. One of the alternative technologies that may be used is LiDAR, which utilizes lasers to measure distances and produce detailed 3D maps. This technology, initially utilized in meteorology in the 1970s, is now being employed by autonomous vehicles for detecting their surroundings.
A source within Surrey County Council, responsible for overseeing the investigation, indicated that specialized equipment was scheduled to arrive on February 26. This equipment would be used to conduct a comprehensive assessment to ensure that any required stability and repair work is conducted safely and efficiently. Tandridge District Council announced plans to hold a public meeting at St Nicholas Youth Centre to address concerns from local residents and business owners regarding the sinkhole.
Surrey Police informed the public on Sunday that added security measures had been implemented in the area surrounding the sinkhole. The perimeter fencing of the cordoned-off area had been reinforced, and the site would be continuously monitored by Ringway 24/7 on behalf of Surrey County Council. Additional security measures, such as the installation of CCTV cameras and provision of an overnight security guard by Tandridge District Council, had been put in place. Surrey Police is also collaborating with local authorities to suggest further security enhancements for the area
