A couple from Leicestershire, John and Catherine Canning, have experienced a life-changing event that has given them a new lease on life. John was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 2008, which severely impacted his day-to-day activities. The 66-year-old had to rely on oxygen 24 hours a day and was unable to partake in activities he once enjoyed, such as ballroom dancing. However, following a double lung transplant in April 2023, John’s health has significantly improved, allowing the couple to dance together once again.
Catherine described their first dance after the transplant as a profound and emotional moment, filled with gratitude for the anonymous donor who made it possible. The couple’s friends and family have been a strong source of support throughout their journey, with Catherine expressing immense appreciation for their unwavering love and care. Despite the challenges and uncertainties they faced, John and Catherine remained optimistic and determined throughout the process, culminating in a successful transplant at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
John’s recovery post-surgery has been remarkable, with noticeable improvements in his quality of life. He no longer relies on oxygen tanks and can engage in physical activities without feeling breathless. Last year, he participated in the British Transplant Games, walking 3.1 miles (5km) at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Stadium, which he described as an emotional and empowering experience. The Cannings have not only focused on their own journey to recovery but have also advocated for organ donation awareness, highlighting the importance of discussing one’s wishes with loved ones in order to potentially save lives.
On a symbolic note, the couple sent a voice note to BBC Radio Leicester on “Blue Monday,” sharing their plans to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and embark on a Mediterranean cruise after John’s recovery.
