Wythenshawe: Homes evacuated after huge lorry fire breaks out

Emergency services were called to respond to a massive lorry fire that broke out on an industrial estate, resulting in the evacuation of nearby homes, according to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). The blaze, which involved heavy goods vehicles, ignited on Ennis Close in Wythenshawe just after 08:00 GMT. At the peak of the fire, ten fire engines were deployed to tackle the flames, but the response was later reduced to four engines as the situation came under control after close to three hours of firefighting efforts, as reported by GMFRS. The fire service advised residents to keep their windows and doors shut and to avoid the affected area.

Eyewitness Ben Meighan-Carey, who resides in the vicinity, described the initial moments of the incident, stating that the sounds resembled fireworks but grew increasingly louder. Meighan-Carey mentioned hearing continuous bangs that resembled explosions for a duration of five to 10 minutes before observing a significant amount of smoke outside. The fire began at the Roundthorn industrial estate near Wythenshawe Hospital, creating a dramatic scene with black smoke billowing from an orange-hued glow and several cars visible in the foreground.

GMFRS reported that firefighting units from various locations across Greater Manchester were mobilized to address the fire. A spokesperson confirmed the swift arrival of crews on the scene, actively working to extinguish the flames while also arranging for the evacuation of multiple nearby properties. The response involved the participation of Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service, who fortunately reported no casualties as a result of the incident. GMP established a cordon and facilitated the evacuation of neighboring homes, leading to the closure of Ledson Road, Floats Road, and portions of Southmoor Road for safety reasons
