UK weather: warnings issued for wind and rain

The past few days have given us a taste of spring weather, but wind and rain have still made their presence known. While some areas like Hull, Thetford, and Nairn enjoyed temperatures of 17 Celsius (63F), many western regions were battered by gusts and showers. As we head into Sunday, the Met Office is cautioning about more strong winds and heavy rain following a sunny start to the weekend.

Yellow warnings for wind cover most of the UK, with additional rain warnings for certain western hills. Although the day may begin dry in many areas, conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly from the west. Gusts ranging from 50-60mph (80-96km/h) in Northern Ireland and up to 70mph (113km/h) in exposed locations across Scotland and England could lead to disruptions in transportation and potential power outages.

Heavy rain is also anticipated, with warnings in place for various regions. South-west Scotland, the Lake District, and parts of southern Wales and southwest England could see between 20 to 50mm of rain (0.8 to 2in) with localized flooding potential. As the rain and strong winds move through, the south-east of the UK will experience these conditions later in the evening, clearing out by Sunday night
