Teenager plotted mass shooting 'like Columbine' at Edinburgh school

A young teenager with an unhealthy obsession with murder had a disturbing plan to carry out a mass shooting at his school in Edinburgh. The boy, influenced by the Columbine High School massacre in the United States in 1999, where 12 students and a teacher were killed, envisioned a horrific attack at his own secondary school. Described as a vulnerable individual with mental health difficulties, the 17-year-old pleaded guilty to charges under the Terrorism Act at the High Court in Glasgow.

In the summer of 2023, a social media photo of the boy at school in combat gear and carrying an imitation gun caused widespread panic among pupils and parents, leading to a large-scale police investigation. The teenager, who also had racist and pro-Nazi views, had previously been referred to a national program aimed at preventing individuals from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
