A man’s eye was saved thanks to the use of a donated placenta following an acid attack. Paul Laskey, who experienced severe chemical burns to his eye after acid was squirted onto his face, underwent two emergency corneal transplants and three amnion grafts. These grafts utilized tissue from the inner lining of a donated placenta to save his eye. Expressing his gratitude, Laskey thanked the mother who donated her placenta to help individuals like himself who were at risk of losing their eyesight completely.
Prof Francisco Figueiredo, a consultant ophthalmologist at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, deemed the success of the operation remarkable and credited the generosity of the mother for making it possible.
