The case surrounding the death of singer Liam Payne has taken a turn as manslaughter charges against a friend of the singer and two hotel staff members in Buenos Aires have been dropped. The accused, Rogelio “Roger” Nores, and the two hotel workers were initially charged two months after Payne’s tragic death. However, appeal court judges recently reversed the decision to charge all three individuals.
While the charges against Nores and the hotel workers have been dropped, two other men who allegedly sold cocaine to Payne before his death remain in prison and are still set to face prosecution and a likely trial. Payne passed away in October after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in the Argentine capital.
Mr. Nores expressed relief that the charges against him had been removed, stating, “Glad this is finally over. I’m happy I’m now going to be able to travel to the UK and say goodbye to my friend.” His lawyer, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that Nores was not responsible for Payne’s death as he was simply a friend with no legal obligation to ensure his safety.
The appeal court judges’ ruling, which was disclosed by Rolling Stone, exonerated the two hotel workers, Gilda Martin and Esteban Grassi, who will no longer face prosecution. Prosecutors have the option to challenge the decision to drop the charges, though they have not indicated if they plan to do so. Meanwhile, the two men accused of supplying drugs to Payne, waiter Braian Nahuel Paiz and suspended hotel worker Ezequiel David Pereyra, still face potential prison sentences if convicted.
