In a shocking revelation, a 66-year-old woman has been brought before the court, facing accusations of causing the death of a young child through scalding in a hot bath nearly 50 years ago. The accused, Janice Nix, is charged with manslaughter in connection to the tragic demise of five-year-old Andrea Bernard, who sustained severe burns in Thornton Heath, south London, back in June 1978. Despite being rushed to a burns unit in East Grinstead, West Sussex, the young girl succumbed to her injuries the following month, as per the statement from the Metropolitan Police.
During the court proceedings at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, it was disclosed that on the fateful day of 6 June 1978, Andrea was compelled to endure a scalding hot bath that affected 50% of her body. Apart from the manslaughter charge, Ms. Nix also faces allegations of cruelty towards Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, spanning from 1 October 1975 to 6 June 1978, when he was between the ages of five and eight. The defendant’s age during the time of the purported incidents ranged from 16 to 19 years old.
In a brief court appearance, Ms. Nix remained mostly silent, only verifying her name, age, and address. The Metropolitan Police divulged that an investigation into Andrea’s tragic passing was reopened in September 2022 following a report by Mr. Bernard. Consequently, the defendant was granted bail under specified conditions which include surrendering her passports and refraining from visiting any international travel hubs.
