Jellycat toys thief given suspended jail sentence

A female resident of Eye in Suffolk, Ruby Smith, has been handed a suspended prison sentence for stealing close to £3,000 worth of Jellycat toys. Norfolk Police reported that Smith, 35, was caught on camera placing the toys in her bag, clothes, and a child’s pram before leaving without paying. The thefts occurred between July and September at garden centers in Bressingham, Wroxham, and Thetford in Norfolk. Law enforcement officials found 40 of the stolen toys at her residence, leading to her receiving a 26-week prison term suspended for 24 months as of Monday.

Jellycat, which originated in London in 1999, is renowned for its cuddly toys that are priced at around £12 for smaller versions and up to £200 for larger ones. The company’s animal and everyday object-inspired toys have gained substantial popularity among collectors, who frequently showcase their latest acquisitions on social media platforms. Some Jellycat ranges, such as a peach that went viral last year, have quickly sold out upon release, sparking a surge in secondary sales on platforms like Vinted.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Smith was ordered by the Norwich Magistrates’ Court to compensate £1,780 to the victims and pay a £154 surcharge. She will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device for three months and participate in a 40-day accredited program, along with engaging in a rehabilitation activity program for up to seven days. The sentencing aims to hold Smith accountable for her actions and rehabilitate her while ensuring restitution to those affected by her thefts
