Iran charges detained Britons Craig and Lindsay Foreman with espionage

Craig and Lindsay Foreman, British citizens, are facing charges of espionage in Iran, according to the country’s judiciary news agency. The couple, both 52 years old, were arrested in January on unspecified security charges, which only recently came to light. Iranian officials stated that the Foremans had entered the country posing as tourists but were allegedly gathering information across various provinces.

Originally from East Sussex, the Foremans had relocated to Andalucia, Spain, in 2019, aiming for a fresh start. Their journey was documented on an episode of Channel 4’s A New Life in the Sun in 2022, showcasing their expat life. The couple, who had been traveling the world on a motorbike, had intended to spend only five days in Iran before continuing their journey to Australia. They had crossed into Iran from Armenia on December 30 and were en route to Pakistan by January 4.

Prior to their detention, Craig and Lindsay Foreman had posted on social media expressing their excitement about being in Iran. Lindsay, a life coach with a psychology doctorate, described her experience as “amazing,” while her carpenter husband, Craig, praised the country and its people. Iranian officials claimed that the couple had been monitored by intelligence agencies in various provinces, leading to their arrest as part of a coordinated intelligence operation. They alleged that the Foremans were collaborating with front organizations connected to hostile and Western intelligence services, under the guise of research and investigative activities
