Harwich friends died in Turkey quad bike crash, inquest hears

Childhood buddies tragically lost their lives in a fatal quad bike crash while on vacation, a recent inquest revealed. Cory Dove and Matthew Steward, both 26 years old, were in Fethiye, Turkey when they sustained fatal “multiple traumatic injuries” on May 13. With both friends hailing from Harwich, they passed away on the spot after being thrown from the quad bike as it overturned, as shared by the Essex Coroner’s Court. Senior coroner Lincoln Brookes expressed his sympathy for the families, recognizing the immense pain they must be enduring.

The testimonies brought up at the inquest detailed how Mr. Dove and Mr. Steward were holidaying with their families and had made plans to meet up. The quad bike excursion was part of their day as they cruised together before Mr. Dove took the wheel and headed towards a nearby store close to their hotel around 11:55 local time. A police report from Turkey highlighted Mr. Dove’s excessive speed on a curvy road before the unfortunate collision transpired. Subsequently, the vehicle lost control, leading to the tragic incident.

The accident occurred in a residential area of Fethiye, with authorities stating that Mr. Dove’s negligent and reckless driving forced him over to the wrong side of the road, causing the collision with the minibus. Despite the police’s assertion of his speeding, the exact circumstances leading to this conclusion remained blurred. The bus driver relayed his account of the incident, describing the panic-stricken maneuver by Mr. Dove which resulted in the collision. Following an investigation, no charges were pressed against the driver, although it was indicated that Mr. Dove had taken a sharp turn prior to the crash.

The aftermath of the tragic event left both Mr. Dove and Mr. Steward with fractures, lacerations, bruises, and pulmonary oedema. These fatal injuries led to their untimely demise shortly after midnight on May 14. Family members of the duo mourned their loss, with Mr. Dove’s mother, Sarah, fondly reminiscing about her son’s passion for quad biking. The family described him as respectful and someone who always extended a helping hand to others. As for Mr. Steward, his family highlighted his role as a devoted father and shared memories of his loving, caring, and protective nature towards his children
