Mental health fund launched by Universal Music Group and Music Health Alliance

Universal Music Group (UMG) and Music Health Alliance, a non-profit healthcare organization, have come together to introduce a new initiative aimed at supporting mental health for professionals in the music industry. The Music Industry Mental Health Fund is designed to offer comprehensive outpatient mental health resources to both current and former industry workers. This program builds upon a collaborative healthcare access program launched by UMG and MHA four years ago. Susan Mazo, UMG’s Chief Impact Officer, expressed the importance of establishing a streamlined pathway for mental health access, funding, and care planning in the industry.

The Music Industry Mental Health Fund will provide music industry professionals with access to mental health services, personalized recommendations for mental health counselors, and financial grants to assist with covering costs. Additionally, the fund will offer resources to ensure continuity of care through additional financial and mental health support. This initiative is a testament to the commitment of both UMG and MHA towards providing ongoing and effective mental health support to individuals working within the music industry. Tatum Hauck Allsep, the founder and CEO of MHA, emphasized the fund’s dedication to the health, well-being, and sustainability of the music industry workforce.

In addition to financial assistance, the Music Industry Mental Health Fund will provide “wraparound services” such as psychiatric support, facilitation of intensive outpatient and inpatient programs, and data collection. The launch of this fund was sparked by singer-songwriter Chappell Roan’s powerful acceptance speech at the GRAMMY Awards, where she highlighted the lack of mental health support from major labels in the industry. Through this collaborative effort between UMG and MHA, individuals within the music industry can now access necessary mental health resources and support within a 24-hour response window. Gemma Ross, Assistant Editor at Mixmag, brings attention to this important initiative and its impact on mental health within the music industry.
