Culture Liverpool is seeking out the best dancing talent in the city, from street performances to cabaret shows. The highly anticipated Leap Dance Festival made a triumphant return in 2024 after a five-year hiatus, and now creative individuals and organizations have the chance to showcase their talents this May. Artists in all stages of their career and in any style of dance are encouraged to apply for a grant to create a new piece of work to be featured at the festival.
In the previous edition of Leap in 2024, 781 performers delivered 165 individual performances over 15 days in various venues and public spaces throughout Liverpool, drawing in over 37,000 spectators. Festival favorites like Dancing In The Streets and Youth Dance Platform will be making a comeback this year. Furthermore, the festival will feature the Liverpool Dance Prize, offering emerging artists the opportunity to win a development fund and showcase their work.
Thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, four to five grants of up to £2000 each will be awarded to support projects that align with goals such as building community pride, increasing life chances, and bringing about positive social impact. Submissions are now open to Liverpool-based artists, organizations, freelance artists, and small collectives. The deadline for applications is set for 10 am on February 20th.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, expressed excitement about the return of the dance festival and emphasized the importance of community engagement and the mental and physical health benefits of dance festivals. Director of Leap Dance Festival, Paul Doyle, is looking forward to showcasing the work of Liverpool-based dance artists and building on the success of previous editions.
