Four university students tragically lost their lives in a car crash that occurred when their vehicle collided with a building on Magdalen Street in Colchester on 1st February. The students, identified as Makyle Bayley, Eva Darold-Tchikaya, Anthony “TJ” Hibbert, and Daljang Wol, were remembered and honored at the University of Essex as basketball games resumed for the first time post the incident. Mr. Hibbert and Mr. Wol were part of the Essex Rebels basketball team, with Saturday’s games dedicated to the memory of the victims.

University of Essex’s director of sport, Dave Parry, expressed the immense loss felt by the university and sporting community following the tragic deaths of the four beloved members. Mr. Bayley was associated with the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) basketball team, while Ms. Darold-Tchikaya was an active member of the Essex Blades dance club and other societies. The university came together to pay tribute to the departed souls and offer support to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.

Over 1,000 individuals, including students, staff, and relatives of the victims, gathered last week in remembrance of the students. Mr. Parry acknowledged the overwhelming support received from various communities, particularly the basketball fraternity, in the wake of the tragic events.
