Manic Street Preachers: The story behind David Hurn album cover

The latest album cover for the Manic Street Preachers has a unique story behind it, thanks to the renowned photographer David Hurn. Hurn shared that the inspiration for the album cover came to him while he was en route to photograph the Navajo native Americans in Arizona. During his journey, he spotted a peculiar sight that seemed “drunken” and out of the ordinary, leading to the creation of this distinctive cover.

Hurn, a luminary of the legendary Magnum Photos agency, has a keen eye for capturing captivating moments. Reflecting on his experience, he recalled driving through the Painted Desert when he noticed a strange, wiggly line that looked as if someone intoxicated had drawn on the road. Intrigued by this unexpected sight, he decided to photograph it, which ultimately became the focal point of the Manics’ latest album cover.

This album, titled “Critical Thinking,” marks the band’s 15th studio release and notably features bassist Nicky Wire on lead vocals. Wire, a longtime admirer of Hurn, described him as a “colossus” of modern documentary photography. Despite Hurn’s extensive career working with notable figures like Michael Caine and Sophia Loren, this album cover represents the first time his photography has been featured on a rock album. Hurn shared that when the band approached him about using his photo, he immediately gave his approval, delighted to contribute to their creative vision.

Having recently received the Outstanding Contribution to Journalism award at the 2024 Wales Media Awards, Hurn continues to find inspiration in the world around him. He emphasized the importance of capturing moments that evoke emotion and interest, always carrying a camera with him wherever he goes. For Hurn, photography is about capturing the essence of a moment, especially those that resonate with others on a deeper level
