A woman who previously campaigned against immigration to the UK has had a change of heart after embarking on a journey from Somalia to the UK. Jess Hallett, from Llanelli, was chosen as one of six opinionated Brits to participate in Channel 4’s newest series, Go Back To Where You Came From. Throughout the journey, she experienced the dangers of small boat crossings, traversed the African desert, and navigated border crossings facilitated by people smugglers.
Reflecting on her experience, Jess expressed empathy for those making the perilous journey, stating, “If I was in their shoes I would be jumping on the boat myself.” She underscored that the reality she witnessed in person far surpassed what is depicted on the internet. Speaking with BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, Jess described how the trip shook her to the core, reinforcing her belief that people should be seen as individuals with unique experiences and struggles.
Starting their journey in Mogadishu, Somalia, and Raqqa, Syria, two of the most hazardous cities globally, Jess and her fellow participants were consistently confronted with scenarios that challenged their preconceived notions. Prior to the experience, Jess adamantly believed her views would remain unchanged, questioning why more boats were being allowed in when she believed the UK was already full.
