In the UK, boys born in 2023 are projected to have an average life expectancy of 86.7 years, while girls can expect to live up to 90 years, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This data reveals a consistent trend of increasing life expectancy for both men and women, with the survival gap between the sexes gradually narrowing. Experts attribute this trend to healthier lifestyle choices made by men in recent years.
The ONS report, which is based on the most recent survival figures for 2023, also provides insights into future projections. It is estimated that more than one in 10 boys and one in six girls born in 2023 will live to celebrate their 100th birthday. Looking ahead to 2047, projections indicate that a quarter of baby girls and nearly a fifth of baby boys could reach the century mark.
Overall, the report predicts that men born in 2047 may have a life expectancy of 89.3 years, while women could live up to 92.2 years. However, it is important to note that these estimates are subject to change, as they are based on population data and do not guarantee individual longevity. For example, men who are 65 years old in 2023 can expect to live an additional 19.8 years on average, while women of the same age can anticipate 22.5 more years of life.
Kerry Gadsdon, a representative from the ONS, pointed out that the gap in life expectancy between men and women has been steadily closing for decades. This trend is likely due to various factors such as improved lifestyle choices, reduced smoking rates, better working conditions for men, and advancements in healthcare, particularly in preventing and treating heart disease. The ONS projects that by 2072, the life expectancy gap between men and women could shrink to just 2.5 years
