Barry Humphries' Dame Edna's glasses auctioned for £37,800

A recent auction at Christie’s auction house resulted in a surprising sale of Barry Humphries’ Dame Edna Everage glasses. The estimated value of the glasses was between £1,000 and £1,500, but they ended up selling for an impressive £37,800. Humphries, who sadly passed away in 2023 due to complications from hip surgery at the age of 89, was honored with a state memorial at the Sydney Opera House.

Dame Edna Everage, one of Humphries’ most iconic creations, gained popularity in the UK during the 1970s, known for her distinctive signature sunglasses. The auction also included other notable items such as a gown worn by Humphries as Dame Edna at the Royal Variety Show in 2013, which sold for £21,420. Additionally, Humphries’ personal collection featured artwork, books, and manuscripts.

One of the most expensive items sold at the auction was Charles Conder’s painting titled Sand dunes, Ambleteuse, which fetched £239,400. The sale in total realized an impressive sum of £4,627,224, including buyer’s premium, over the course of a nine-hour auction. Benedict Winter of Christie’s London praised the results, attributing them to Barry’s distinctive vision and lifelong dedication to collecting.

Interestingly, this auction is not the first time famous spectacles have fetched a high price. Singer Robbie Williams recently made headlines after winning a bid for comedy legend Eric Morecambe’s glasses and pipe at a separate auction, resulting in tears of joy from the musician
