The upcoming exhibition at the Barbican Centre, titled “Feel the Sound,” will be an immersive experience exploring our personal relationship to sound. Running from May 22 to August 31, this exhibition will feature 11 installations and commissions spread across various parts of the Barbican Centre. Among these installations, the underground car park will be used as a club space for the very first time.
Co-produced by MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives in Tokyo, “Feel the Sound” will showcase works from a range of artists and collectives, including Trans Voices, Miyu Hosoi, Evan Ifekoya, and MUTEK. One of the featured installations, titled “Joy Ride,” by Temporary Pleasure, will examine the connection between “boy racers” and DIY raves, incorporating a modified car soundsystem within the space of Car Park 5.
Another installation in Car Park 5, called “Forever Frequencies” by Domestic Data Streamers, will consist of a series of monoliths exploring the world of sound. Additionally, “Your Inner Symphony,” created by Kinda Studios and Nexus Studios, will delve into the ways in which music shapes our internal rhythms based on visitors’ emotional responses. This multi-sensory exhibition aims to expand our understanding of sound and its impact on our lives, inviting visitors to explore the diverse possibilities of sonic experiences.
Luke Kemp, Barbican Immersive’s creative programme head, emphasizes the importance of encountering sound in different spaces and reflecting on how it shapes our perceptions. As the organization continues to curate experiential exhibitions that engage with various themes, “Feel the Sound” promises to be a captivating exploration of the rhythm of the planet and our bodies.
