Robert Hall lost his baby daughter, Mabli Cariad Hall, when a pushchair holding her was hit by a car. On the same day, Hall was dealing with visiting his mother, who was in the terminal stages of her battle with motor neurone disease. Mabli died in Bristol as a result of a serious traumatic brain injury following the crash, which took place outside Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire on 21 June 2023. Mabli’s grandmother passed away the next day.
Mabli’s death was caused by Bridget Curtis, who was sentenced to four years in jail last month after pleading guilty to causing the injuries that led to the baby’s death by dangerous driving. Curtis had distracted herself by looking for a handbag while still controlling the car’s pedals, according to Swansea Crown Court.
Hall recalled the events and said that he was in the hospital room with his infant daughter when he received the news that his mother had died. It was a difficult moment for the family, as they were now facing another tragedy.
Mabli’s siblings were able to visit their sister before her death and say goodbye. They were shown a picture of her inside the hospital room to prepare them, and it helped them deal with the grief of losing their younger sibling.
Hall admits that the 19-month wait for Curtis’ sentencing was a nightmare. Ultimately, he and his wife were grateful to the judge for giving them justice, but they’re still in “survival mode every single day.” The family has been focusing on supporting their other children and trying to find a way forward together.
Hall recounted the long, difficult hours that he had to spend in the hospital with his injured family, waiting for news. During this time, he wasn’t able to be with Mabli, one of the longest periods his wife had ever gone without being with her daughter. He suffered injuries in the crash, and the memories of that day remain difficult to speak about.
Still, Hall has been moving forward with his life and finding a way to come to terms with the loss. His story serves as a reminder of the value of life and the precious nature of every moment.
