The funeral for the late Scotsman and Manchester United legend, Denis Law, was attended by approximately 750 people including family, friends, and footballers from across the generations. Even more admirers of the prominent footballer gathered at Old Trafford to pay their respects and applaud as the hearse passed the stadium, stopping at the Trinity statue that portrays him along with George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. From there, the procession headed to Manchester Cathedral. Law, who died last month, was the only Scotsman to ever be named the world’s best player.
Manchester United’s retired manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was one of the footballers who attended and described Law as “my hero.” Current manager, Ruben Amorim was also in attendance. Among the mourners, some of Manchester City’s greats, including Law’s former teammates Joe Corrigan and Mike Summerbee, paid their respects to the Red Devils icon who also played for City.
The funeral procession arrived at Manchester Cathedral with the sound of bagpipes playing “Flower of Scotland”. Diana Law also paid tribute to her late father, noting that he had now reunited with Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best and saying, “I think of them all up there in heaven, reunited, smiling down”.
In his speech, Sir Alex spoke about Law’s profound love for Scotland and his desire to beat England, as well as his admiration for his courage and profile. He humorously remarked that Law “would fight his granny for a goal”. Meanwhile, Cannon Grace Thomas leading the service said, “Denis Law’s death marked the end of an era, the last of the famous Trinity to go”. Rod Steward’s rendition of “Angel” was played as the service concluded.
