A police incident in Sheffield has prompted the evacuation of nearby residents following reports of a man with suspected weapons inside a property. South Yorkshire Police officers were called to the Gateway apartment building on Broad Street in the city at around 7 PM on Monday evening.
In response to the incident, some of the affected residents sought refuge at the Ponds Forge sports centre, while students housed at the nearby Pinnacles accommodation building were told to remain in their flats. According to the police, emergency services personnel remain at the site of the incident, with the road closed off.
Further information posted on the force’s social media platform stated that those in the property’s building had been evacuated while those in neighbouring buildings had been informed to remain inside while policing operations were conducted. Sheffield Parkway will remain closed between the Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way, with drivers advised to seek alternative routes.
The incident has also impacted the tram network in the area, with trams affected by the ongoing police investigation into the incident. There have been no reported casualties following the reported gun incident, and the police force provided no indication of when it expects Broad Street to reopen to the public
