The Scottish city of Glasgow was host to the country’s sole furry convention, which saw hundreds of people taking part in the festivities. It was reported that furries first surfaced in the early 1980s with the appearance of anthropomorphic characters in science-fiction comics and fan art. Fans of these characters eventually began dressing in full fur suits, which ranged from domestic animals such as cats and dogs to more imaginative creatures like dragons and unicorns. From these practices, furries emerged as an underground subculture that reportedly led to various forms of furry art, music and film.
The Scotiacon Convention, which was initially launched in Inverness in 2011, has now reached the point of having a total of 70 scheduled events over its four-day course. The organisers are anticipating the attendance of around 1,700 guests, which would make it their largest convention yet. Some of the different programs on offer throughout the weekend included a casino night, an art auction, fanfiction writing panels, a rave and a wine and cheese reception. While canine and feline costumes did prove to be the most substantial representation, there was also a considerable presence from other creature types, which included some from the realm of fantasy themed literature and games.
As furries across the world develop into an increasingly recognised subculture, there have been reports clarifying the distinction between being just a furry fan and a person who seeks to live their life as a furry and may identify as such. In these cases, it is suggested that adopting a fursona, which reflects the individual’s choice of animal character, can be seen as a representation of an avatar that serves to express facets of that person’s personality.
