Strabane: Stephen Holmes dies days after being assaulted at house

A man from County Tyrone who was the victim of a serious assault has died, and a murder investigation has been launched. Stephen Holmes passed away on Saturday morning, several days after being assaulted at his home in Beechmount Village, Strabane. Mr Holmes was admitted to Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital following the attack before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he was being treated in critical care. The local police force has launched a murder investigation in the wake of Mr Holmes’ death.

According to his sister Zara, Stephen was a “gentle soul” who was highly popular among family and friends. In a statement to the BBC, Zara explained that he relished life with his children, describing him as “everybody’s friend” and “easy going.” The assault has rocked the community in Beechmount Village, with local politicians expressing shock and grief in its aftermath.

Earlier this week, a man was brought to Strabane Magistrates’ Court accused of several crimes in connection with the assault. Dylan McCrossan of Beechmount Village is facing charges including drug possession and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Mr McCrossan appeared via video-link before the court, where he acknowledged his identity and confirmed that he was aware of the charges against him. He is currently being held on remand, while the police review the charges he faces in light of Mr Holmes’ death.

Councilor Paul Gallagher, who represents Strabane, said that Mr Holmes’ death had devastated the entire community. He also spoke about the shock of locals in Beechmount Village, with the attack having occurred in a newly-built estate.
