'Once-in-a-lifetime' starling murmuration for Leicestershire village

The residents of a small village in Leicestershire have been experiencing a rare and incredible sight as starlings have been flocking in massive numbers – something that hasn’t been seen in 40 years, according to some long-time residents. These murmurations, as they are known, are a remarkable sight to behold as thousands of birds fly together, creating swooping shapes in the sky. The village has been having to contend with the noise and mess that come with the birds roosting in the area, but most are simply thrilled to witness such an incredible sight.

According to Andy Neilson, the reserves officer at Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, seeing a murmuration of this size in the area is quite uncommon, and some believe that it may be a once-in-a-lifetime event for area residents. The sight is so impressive, in fact, that some villagers have reported needing to clean their cars in the morning due to the droppings left behind by the birds. However, this small inconvenience is more than worth it for many locals, who see the stunning murmurations as a rare treat.

Several villagers have expressed their privilege at having been able to witness this event, with one local named Suzanne Mullins saying she had never seen anything like it. Despite the mess that comes with such a large flock of birds, most locals seem happy to put up with the noise and cleaning, as the sheer sight of thousands of birds creating incredible shapes in the sky is too much to miss. This rare event is sure to be talked about for years to come in the small village of Rearsby, where such things are not often seen
