£29.00Ivy Hart, a woman of remarkable age at 105, confidently stated that singing has been the key to her youthful outlook on life. She even dreams of performing a concert for her fellow care home residents in Belong Crewe one day. Despite her love for music, Hart has frequently voiced criticism of some of the performers recently brought into the care home, feeling that she could do a better job than some of the professionals. “No, they weren’t good,” she said. “I very nearly put my name down. I would have done it any time.”
Born and raised in Crewe, Hart attended Bedford Street School, where she was often called on to sing in front of the class. Despite the loss of her father when she was just four, Hart credited her mother for introducing her to music and making sure that she could pay for singing lessons. However, Hart is an outgoing woman, in contrast to her mother’s quieter personality. In any case, music led Hart to meet her husband George at a dance hall in Crewe during her mid-20s. She described him as “absolutely lovely,” and he worked for the RAF at Crewe Municipal Buildings.
Music has remained a central part of Hart’s life ever since, with various performances in local choirs, concerts, and churches. One of her most significant shows was performing at the Nantwich Civic Hall alongside the Rochdale Band in 1976. Hart went on to work at a school for boys with learning difficulties when she returned to Crewe in her 50s, saying she loved them and was sad when she had to retire. Until the grand old age of 104, Hart lived independently, impressively moving into Belong Crewe only last year.
She has plenty of wisdom to share with others, advising younger generations to simply “take life as it comes.” She added that people should “do the best you can with it.” The personality of the aged woman is a clear light in her care home, as Emma Spurrier, one of the care workers, describes Ivy Hart as “definitely a character” and believes that everyone can use a little bit of Ivy in their lives
