Malky McCormick, the Scottish cartoonist who co-created The Big Yin comic strip with Billy Connolly, has donated his personal archive including original artwork and personal items to East Ayrshire Leisure Trust. McCormick settled in Ayrshire after growing up in Glasgow, and teamed up with Connolly to produce The Big Yin strip for the Sunday Mail newspaper. The name referred to the Glaswegian comic’s nickname and became a popular feature with readers until it stopped appearing in 1977. McCormick continued his career as a cartoonist and caricaturist, including creating likenesses of every Scottish football manager from the 1970s for the Scottish Football Museum.
The archive will be digitised and will form part of public exhibitions, with archivists aiming to use McCormick’s work to encourage young people into art.
Billy Connolly is one of those who warmly welcomes the news and is pleased that the public is set to enjoy his and McCormick’s work and “value it and appreciate it.”
