Trains restart after suspected drink-driver crashes on to tracks in Salford

After a car driven by a suspected drunk-driver was cleared from train tracks, rail lines between Manchester and Liverpool have reopened. The incident has caused significant disruption and it is anticipated that scheduled services operated by Northern, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales will be impacted until the end of Friday. Images from the scene showed the vehicle inverted with debris surrounding it on the tracks in Salford. National Rail advised of continuing substantial disruption, cancelled or delayed trains, and recommended that travelers verify planned travel before departure. Railway employees are working toward connecting with other displaced trains to restore service.

Greater Manchester police informed the public that the driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He was admitted to the hospital, suffering from severe but non-life-threatening injuries. The event, which happened at Regent Road roundabout, occurred without other vehicles involved.

During the early hours, according to a Network Rail representative, a BMW vehicle crashed on to the railway at Regents Road roundabout in Salford, resulting in an enormous amount of damage to the railway system. Overhead electric cables supporting power to trains were also compromised in the crash. The vehicle was removed from the tracks just before midday, but the elevated lines were not restored to service for numerous hours after the incident.

Football enthusiasts may also be at risk of being delayed in attending the 8pm football game between Manchester United and Leicester City due to the chaos of this incident. Network Rail conveyed sympathy for passengers impacted and suggested that anyone intending to travel by train between Liverpool and Manchester should verify any revised travel arrangements with their relevant train operator
