Erykah Badu has made an appearance on producer Jamie xx’s latest single ‘F.U.’. The track features on the deluxe edition of Jamie xx’s second album ‘In Waves’, which was released to critical acclaim in 2024. Badu’s improvised vocals, captured during a Primavera Sound afterparty in 2019, are layered over a synth-heavy house beat. The recording glitch that caused the music to drop out provided the opportunity for Badu to perform in front of an enthusiastic crowd, resulting in a unique and powerful collaboration that was later used as the basis for ‘F.U.’.
Jamie xx connected with the American singer-songwriter while finishing the album and the result is a track he is immensely pleased with. “I’m so happy that she is a part of ‘In Waves’. Thank you Erykah!”, he enthused, before adding “the decks stopped working and she just freestyled this incredible acapella performance, fully improvised, just her and the mic”. The track is one of two new songs included on the deluxe edition, which was released digitally on January 29. The other new track is ‘Do Something’, and the album also features previously released singles ‘It’s So Good’, ‘LET’S DO IT AGAIN’, and ‘KILL DEM’.
‘In Waves (Deluxe Edition)’ marks the follow-up to Jamie xx’s debut album ‘In Colour’, which was released nine years prior.
