As Toxteth continues to navigate these challenges, the community remains resilient and supportive of one another.
“There’s a lot of love and support here,” said Karen Jones, who has lived in Toxteth for 25 years. “Everybody knows everybody. I could go to the shops tomorrow, and if I didn’t have anything in my purse, someone would say, ‘Go ahead, I’ll pay for it and you can sort me out later.’”
In addition to the strength of the community, a sense of hope remains in the younger generations who are working to create change in a world where their opportunities have been limited.
“We are part of an international revolution that is coming up,” Crawford said. “We can build something different, we can build something new.”
For those who have grown up in Toxteth, the fight for change and a better future continues.
“We’re at the edge of the world when you’re in Liverpool 8,” Morgan said. “We live our lives trying to get to the centre.”
