Historic nightclub Waterfront returns to Hull under new ownership

After its acquisition by Rekom UK in 2017, Hull nightclub Atik Hull has been rebranded and restored to its former name Waterfront, which was the name it bore during the peak of its popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. The future of the venue had been uncertain for some time after Rekom UK, the largest nightclub operator in the UK, went into administration. Waterfront was originally converted from an industrial warehouse into a nightclub and restaurant and had been operating as a nightclub almost continuously since 1978.

The venue was officially reopened on 1st February 2020, after being closed for more than a year. Waterfront’s first night was celebrated with a launch party and a performance by the British rapper and singer ZieZie. The launch was attended by quite a large crowd, including a spokesperson who was very glad to have the venue return to its former glory.

Waterfront spans across five floors and has been outfitted with a new sound and lighting system, CO2 jets, LCD screens, and confetti cannons. Waterfront now boasts a main clubbing space alongside a ‘Retro Room’ filled with arcade machines and a lit-up dance floor and a basement club that plays disco, house, and techno. The Loft, an event space, is separately located, as is Hull’s only R&B space called Boujee which offers a more exclusive experience with VIP booths and table service.

Waterfront has gone through several changes since its inception in 1978; it was shut down in 1996 following a fire and then rebuilt in 2007 and rebranded as Sugar Mill. Sugar Mill run for ten years before it was renamed Atik Hull, the name it carried before its most recent rebranding. Now that it has returned to its former name, the venue aspires to maintain its infamous reputation of the ’80s and ’90s
