Vinyl records have seen a resurgence in popularity among young people, according to a new survey from Vinyl Alliance. The report found that 76% of Gen Z vinyl fans buy records at least once a month, with 84% of respondents purchasing records from stores. In contrast, only 57% of respondents said they preferred shopping online.
The report also revealed that 80% of Gen Z respondents own a record player, with 87% citing high-quality sound as a key factor in their home setups. Vinyl Alliance surveyed 1,100 people aged between 13 and 28, as well as 552 millennials and 500 Gen Xers from several countries including Germany, the UK, and the US.
While vinyl records are known for being expensive and traditionally exclusive, 47% of Gen Z vinyl fans said the high price point is worth it for them. Additionally, 62% of Gen Z respondents said they purchased vinyl records to support the artists they love, compared to only 45% of Gen X fans.
Last year, UK music sales broke records, in part thanks to the increased popularity of vinyl. Sales of vinyl recordings soared by 10.5% to reach £196 million in 2024. Vinyl Alliance’s report provides insight into the spending habits of young music fans, as well as highlighting the continuing demand for physical music among younger listeners. A preview of the report is available to download through the Vinyl Alliance website.
