Positive News magazine has showcased some striking portraits in its latest issue, including one of a “gangster granny” photographed skateboarding in Edinburgh. UK photographer Jack Currie called the woman in question “very own amazing granny” and admitted he had used Photoshop to heighten the image. Elsewhere in the magazine, musician and composer Cosmo Sheldrake reveals his creative process for incorporating more-than-human sounds, such as those of the skylark or a cow’s moo, into his music, while former US prisoner Amanda Knox reflects on how her incarceration helped her hone her own mind and understanding of the present moment.
The “gangster granny” image of Margaret from Edinburgh features briefly in Positive News magazine, capturing the subject in mid-air on a skateboard in front of her delighted friends. Photographer Jack Currie explains that the image was filmed with a drone then manipulated to enhance the lighting and add detail. The fact that his “amazing granny” is skateboarding in her 50s is seen as a vivid example of positive, active ageing. Elsewhere, natural sounds and the more-than-human world feature in an exploration of nature rights and creative ways of invoking the environment. Cosmo Sheldrake speaks about how it is possible to deepen the emotional impact of his work by incorporating the sounds of nature around him.
The magazine also includes an interview with Amanda Knox, who recounts her experiences of being tried, convicted and later acquitted on a charge of murder in Italy. Knox says that prison “hones down” individual appreciation of the mind and the present moment. She observes that a quantifiable appreciation of this internal space can offer solace and a way of moving forward. Knox reveals that she now works with people who have experienced wrongful conviction and helps them to understand how they can use their experiences to “help others, rather than turn in on themselves”.
