Artists invited to work with Spellow Hub community to look to the future

Spellow Community Hub and Library in the Walton area of Liverpool is calling for artists and arts organizations to team up with Culture Liverpool’s Creative Neighbourhoods programme to deliver an artistic residency. The residency is scheduled to be conducted from February to May of 2020. The program aims to address and explore how people feel after the riots that took place, the reopening of the library and perception of the community moving forward. This project will be part of Culture Liverpool’s Creative Neighbourhoods program which is a wider community cohesion initiative.

Creative Neighbourhoods is an ongoing program of collaborative projects and creative interventions that engage with communities and neighbourhoods throughout Liverpool. The program includes artistic residencies, development of public art, events and creative engagement workshops. This work will address the needs of each community at neighbourhood level, using co-creative practices to encourage local pride, a sense of place, inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment.

The creative residency, which will center the voices of the neighbourhood, will focus on themes of community cohesion, sanctuary, and resilience as they relate to the torching of the Spellow Community Hub and Library during the race riots that took place last summer. The Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said the residency will explore these themes and address the needs of the community to encourage inclusivity, empowerment and a sense of pride. Book donations from Her Majesty the Queen and a number of famous authors complemented the campaign fund of £250,000 raised after the arson attack which marked a new beginning for the Walton neighborhood. The deadline for entries is 5 pm on February 21, 2020.

The artistic residency will enable communities and surrounding neighborhoods throughout Liverpool to engage with one another on artistic collaborations and interactive participation in the creative sector. This program is one of various community-based initiatives aimed at encouraging cultural pride and inclusive development through creative neighbourhoods, which follows the progressive Creative Neighbourhoods programme, according to Liverpool City Council’s mission statement
